“My photography began long before I used a camera, in years of drawing, my fondest pleasure in childhood. Since those efforts with a pencil were mostly figurative in character, and in teenage years with attempting a faithful rendering of what I could see before me, the camera seems (in retrospect) a way that I could truly be myself. The camera gave me the licence to copy straight from life… only quickly!
